Texas tow operators move Teslas and other EVs on a flatbed. Wheel-lift towing can damage the drive unit on a Tesla or any EV with a single-speed transmission. The standard practice is flatbed-only. Tesla’s Transport Mode puts the car in a towable state so the parking brake releases and the drive unit stays out of the power path during the tow.

Why flatbed only

Tesla and most modern EVs use a single-speed reduction gear transmission. The motor is connected directly to the drive unit without a traditional transmission that can be put in neutral the way a gas car’s automatic can. Wheel-lift towing rolls the drive wheels without the motor, which can overheat or damage the drive unit.

Flatbed-only is operational practice. There is no Texas statute that requires it, but every Tesla service guide recommends it and the operator-network standard reflects that recommendation. A licensed Houston flatbed operator moves the car without rolling the drive wheels.

What Transport Mode does

Tesla vehicles have a Transport Mode setting (under Service settings) that:

  • Releases the parking brake
  • Keeps the drive unit out of the power path
  • Allows the car to roll slowly under tow (typically at no more than walking speed for very short distances)

Transport Mode is meant for short-distance moves, like getting an undrivable Tesla onto a flatbed. It is not a substitute for flatbed towing on the road. Use Transport Mode to get the car onto the flatbed, then flatbed the car to its destination.

12V vs traction pack

Every Tesla has two batteries:

  • The high-voltage traction pack that powers the motor
  • A small 12V battery that runs accessories and the computer

If the 12V battery is dead, the car’s systems may not respond at all. The operator may not be able to put the car in Transport Mode without 12V power. In that case, the operator can use a jump pack on the 12V terminals to bring the systems up, then put the car in Transport Mode.

If the traction pack is dead, the operator flatbeds the car without Transport Mode. The wheels are off the ground. No damage to the drive unit.

What to tell the operator when you call

When you call (281) 916-1288, tell the operator:

  • The Tesla model (Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, Cybertruck)
  • Whether the 12V battery is responsive (do the screens turn on?)
  • Whether the traction pack has charge (the Tesla app shows state of charge)
  • The pickup location and any access notes (gate code, parking level, narrow street)
  • The destination

The operator dispatches a flatbed-equipped truck. The price is a quote (consent tow from your perspective as the hiring party).

Other EVs the operator can move

The flatbed-only rule applies broadly:

  • Teslas (all models)
  • Chevrolet Bolt, Equinox EV, Silverado EV
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning
  • Rivian R1T, R1S
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona Electric
  • Kia EV6, EV9
  • Volkswagen ID.4
  • Lucid Air
  • Polestar 2
  • Other EVs with single-speed or direct-drive transmissions

For hybrids (Prius, etc.), wheel-lift is usually fine because the transmission can be put in neutral. Ask the operator.

What to do before the operator arrives

  • Confirm the Tesla app is responsive (if so, the 12V and traction pack are alive)
  • Put the car in Transport Mode if you can (under Service settings)
  • Fold the mirrors if possible (prevents damage in narrow garages)
  • Clear loose items from the cabin
  • Note any low-clearance issues at the pickup location

If the 12V is dead and you cannot get the screens up, the operator will bring a jump pack. Let them know when you call.

What about insurance and warranty

Tesla’s warranty does not cover damage from improper towing. Flatbed-only is the operator’s standard practice because it is the safest option. If a Tesla was damaged by a non-flatbed tow, the warranty claim may be denied.

Some insurance policies include flatbed-only towing as part of roadside assistance. Check your policy before you need it.

When you do not need flatbed

A few narrow cases where wheel-lift or dollies are acceptable for an EV:

  • Moving a non-EV Tesla (older Roadsters had a transmission-neutral mode)
  • Towing a Tesla with a verified neutral mode under operator guidance
  • Short repositioning within a parking lot at walking speed (with operator supervision)

For road towing, always use flatbed.
